"The clock is ticking, the hours are going by. The past increases, the future recedes," said Haruki Murakami. So, in my life, much has accumulated throughout the years. I grew up in Poland, then still a communist country--today a prosperous First World nation. I studied philosophy at Warsaw University from 1977 to 1981. In 1981, I visited California and I stayed much longer than planned. At first, it was just a temporary political decision because of the Martial Law imposed in Poland in December of 1981, but the temporary turned into permanent, and the U.S. became my home. The first several years I worked in construction and traveled throughout the country. In the 1990s, I returned to school, first getting a master's and then a Ph.D. in politics. Since the late 1990s, I have been teaching communication, media, and politics at California State Polytechnic University and other colleges. During that time, I also served as a foreign correspondent for the largest daily newspaper in Poland, "Gazeta Wyborcza." Surely, many more interesting things happened somewhere between these mileposts. But that is for another story. Let's hope that, as Murakami writes, the future recedes, but only a little, and much will happen in the next few years.
